TANYA LEECH - HANDMADE CURTAINS

Clean lines October 17th, 2011

Sometimes the smaller parts of a project can be the most satisfying and that was never more the case than in this small utility room.  Situated immediately ahead of you as you came in the front door of this lovely barn conversion, it was an explosion of clutter and disorganisation before we started.  (And if you’re thinking I messed it up just to make the “Before” pictures look a bit more extreme, then you’ll just have to take my word for it, I didn’t touch a thing!)

The budget was small as we wanted to have as much in the pot as we could for all the other rooms in the house, but its amazing what you can do with only a few hundred pounds.  First step was to box everything up and strip out the jumble of open shelves and get that tumble drier down off that worksurface!!

The small existing butlers sink was moved across a little and mounted on brick plinths, and the tumble drier was sited under a new section of worksurface alongside it.  Careful measurement and positioning of the sink ensured there was just enough space for the door to the room to open on one side, and the door of the dishwasher to hinge down on the other side.

Kitchen wall cupboards from a basic range at Build Center, a new strip light, fresh plain white tiles as a splashback and a good old coat of paint transformed this vital room in a family home into a really useful laundry with proper storage space for light bulbs, small tools, candles, vases and so on.

No more wash day blues round here!
